Hi @jbp2 I moved your post to this thread, so hopefully some of our members can help.
I self paid for my surgery, but I know many women who have used the Cross Border Directive (GP signed forms) and who used insurance (GP signed forms and the consultant they were going to provided evidence that the surgery was needed etc) this may differ with insurers. From their experiences I have seen that the initial application is often refused but on appeal, it is approved. Often some extra information is needed specific to your case and the surgeon you are going to is the best to give this extra info.
I have travelled for 6 out of 8 of my surgeries – my tips
Book assistance for the flight for returning home
Explain to flight (or use travel agent) to get the best seat with room, and if a long flight some support in terms of comfort meals etc.
Plan your travel and accommodation carefully, think worst case scenario where you will be at your worst and it wil make it easier
Give yourself time to recover at the destination, hotel/air bnb/holiday apartment etc is cheaper than a hospital stay and many consultants are happy to discharge you to the hotel so that you can recover and be close at hand if you have any issues.
Often the follow up appointment is within a week or before you go home, this is beneficial if you can organise this.
Have someone to travel with you who is helpful – someone who can help with bowel prep, showering, dressing changes, meal prep, gentle exercise (walking) and also at organising local transport as required.
Bring plenty of media with you – tv series, films, books etc
Bring all the meds that you can with you – often prescriptions are more expensive – but may also be cheaper. You can see which country works best but it is no harm to have all with you and a letter from your GP to cover them for airport checks etc.
Most pre op and follow up can be done online – but be careful with Cross Border and Insurance they may have stipulations that you see them in person for appointments.
I am sorry I don’t have specifics on the CBD/Insurance as they were not relevant for my surgeries at the time. I can highly recommend travelling to a specialist surgeon with experience. The right surgeon can change your life.
Some surgeons who are experienced in Europe and USA
Prof Jeorg Keckstein – Austria
Mr Chris Mann – UK
Mr Peter Barton Smith – UK
Prof Mario Malzoni – Italy
Prof Marcello Ceccaroni – Italy
Pro Arnaud Wattiez – Dubai
Dr Ken Sinervo – Atlanta USA
Dr Iris Orbuch – NY and LA USA
Dr Andrew Cook – CA – USA
Nancy’s Nook on Facebook has a lot of recommendations – be sure to do some research on your chosen surgeon.
Most surgeons will have their own price plans – Prof Wattiez did give me some prices I will add this below as an example of the questions I asked him and other surgeons.
Have you treated women from Ireland using the European Union Cross Border Directive?
It was usually the case when I operated in Strasbourg but not valuable in Dubai
Would you be happy to complete the basic paperwork required so that women can receive financial assistance for their surgery?
In Dubai patient can get all documents necessary to get insurance clearance
Do you see private patients – with or without insurance?
I see patient whatever the condition. In dubai the cost of a visit at the hospital is around 120 €
Do you have an insurance code for excision of endometriosis?
We have an hospital code associated with a cost, I do not know if it is corresponding to an insurance code
What is the cost of surgery? ( I understand that this is highly individual, and if you could give an example of costs)
For endometriosis, all included between 6000 and 8000 $, Hysterectomy 5000 to 6000$
Do you perform record reviews and initial consultations over Skype?
Skype is blocked in Dubai but I do record reviews by email
What hospital/town do you perform surgery in?
Dubai Latifa Hospital
What is the nearest airport to this location?
What method do you use to excise endometriosis?
Excision by dissection with bipolar scissors technique
Are there any additional factors that women would need to consider before getting in touch?
I still sometimes operate in Strasbourg-France at the occasion of courses at the Ircad. Patients can be included for surgery and the surgery will be seen by surgeons participating to the course (with all confidentiality and respect for the patient).
